Call them their happy places.

ClubEG members first jetted to Cuba in 2015 for a week of fun in the sun at the Melia Las Americas resort while going tee to green every day at the Varadero Golf Club. The inaugural trip sparked a deep desire to return again and again for golf getaways that have created fabulous memories of golfing and socializing in an idyllic setting with friends that will last a lifetime.

Co-organizer Allen McGee of ClubEG says: “We have gone to Melia Las Americas four years in a row now and always in January. We had 40 people this year, 28 the first year and 52 in both the second and third years.

“It is adults only which means it’s pretty quiet except for us. Lol. Nice size, not too big. Great variety of bars and restaurants. Great beach. Very accessible to golf course, which is only a two-minute walk away. Variety of rooms is amazing and the staff is super. It’s a very safe and secure resort.”

Melia Las America’s close proximity to the Varadero Golf Club scores as a huge reason why ClubEG plans to continue to organize group trips to the resort/golf course, which is located on the northern coast of Cuba.

“We love how close the course is to the resort. Love the layout. There are six easy holes, six hard holes and six holes have really gorgeous views,” says McGee. “The ever-changing breezes play a major role in how the course plays. Doesn’t seem like we play the same course every day. My favourite holes are No. 8 and No. 18 (both are along the coastline) for the views and No. 16 for the challenge. I’m also a fan of No. 13 because it is unique.”

While the setting is spectacular, the ClubEG group has come to realize their holidays have been successful in large part due to the hard work of the golf sales team led by Reynaldo Leon.

Leon and his team of Dayanet, Elizabeth and Marielys have many years of experience in making sure golfers are well taken care of when they visit.

“All the staff really are amazing but, obviously, Reynaldo, Dyane and the team and the great bartender Raoul stand out,” McGee says.

When meal times roll around, McGee says the ClubEG crew enjoys chowing down on the fare presented in the buffet and at the specialty restaurants.

“There are absolutely no complaints about the food,” he says. “We love the pasta-station in the buffet, the Japanese restaurant is a great experience and the new Mediterranean restaurant is very good. We also like go into the town of Varadero one time a year to eat at La Fondue. It’s a yummy restaurant and very inexpensive, too.”

The nightlife in and around Melia Las Americas has also been a hit with the groups from ClubEG.

“The resort presents a show every night for an hour and a bit then the guests like to hang out on the back patio,” says McGee. “We host poker games in our room a few times a week and we also take the short cab ride in antique cars to downtown Varadero to hang out at the Beatles club. It is a group favourite.”

Since the first four getaways have proven to be popular, McGee says ClubEG plans to return next January.

“We will be back next year for sure. Being treated the way they treat us makes it impossible not to go back. It’s great value for sure.”
